Alaska is a mixed up bag of acceptance and homophobia. Gay life coasts along in Anchorage, while the remote landscapes remain stuck in a rut of homophobia where real men are never gay men. The state prefers sexual orientation to stay behind the log doors of private cabins, but an organized gay event? That rattles the ever-so-closeted lawmakers who hide behind a wall of propaganda to dismiss the fact that gay men are the real men.
So, how did Alaska get here?
1890s: The scarcity of women
The Klondike Gold Rush floods the frozen territory with thousands of roaming men living in extreme isolation. Traditional religious oversight collapses in these remote mining camps, creating an undocumented sanctuary where survival and male intimacy overlap out of pure necessity.
1980: Decriminalization
Alaska permanently legalizes private, consensual intimacy between men. No one is getting arrested for having gay sex after this.
1998: One Adam and One Eve
Alaska passes Ballot Measure 2 and becomes the first state in American history to slam a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage into its state constitution: "To be valid or recognized in this State, a marriage may exist only between one man and one woman."
2014: The Book Of Judges
U.S. District Judge Timothy Burgess rules the ban on gay marriage unconstitutional in the landmark Hamby v Parnell ruling. The state is now forced to recognize local gay men and their relationships and now Adam may know Steve in the biblical way and kiss before the vicar.

- Safety: There are absolutely no residency or visa traps for getting sexual health care in the state. State clinics treat your privacy seriously, but you can always use private community clinics if you want an alternative.
- Insider: Identity Health Clinic in Anchorage has closed down but is still being reported as open. It is not. Go to a state hospital or clinic for help - your privacy is secure.

The Research vs Reality
For your gay hit, the best time to arrive in Alaska is June - Pride Month! This is the month when Alaska's isolated community steps into the light and the scene temporarily explodes. The undisputed heavy hitter is the annual festival and parade in downtown Anchorage, managed by the Alaskans Together Foundation, which completely takes over the Delaney Park Strip. It pulls in men from every remote corner of the state, making it the single largest gathering of gay men you will ever see up north.
Apart from Pride month, the day to day gay scene is patchy. The days of local scene magazines such as Gay Alaska are over and trying to find local venues has passed on to a not-so-perfect Google search and apps like Grindr to find a friend who will tell you where to go. Neither is efficient, but it is all we have at the moment. The major problem with Google is that it favors active SEO (Search Engine Optimization), which can allow a straight bar with 'a welcoming atmosphere' to show top of the page while an actual gay bar can be hidden way down in the results. This is why we are here. We need your local feedback which we can check to keep these bars open and findable.
Finding Gay Events
At the moment, all we can find are two gay venues, one being a dedicated gay venue (The Raven) and the other (Mad Myrna's) with reports of post-renovation now providing a 'mixed' atmosphere where straight stag parties and tourists come to enjoy the drag show, often overwhelming the venue and turning it into a mainstream spectacle where gay people are part of the show. Are we wrong about this? Let us know via the link above. Our research also tells us that other cities like Juneau and Fairbanks get by on pop-up events or "friendly" mainstream venues. We haven't listed any because at present we have no verifiable info on these events. Again, if you are local or running such an event, let us know and we can promote it here. We too use search engines but also rely heavily on local sources to make sure we are getting the facts.

Mad Myrna's (Anchorage) — Community Action Hub The largest dance club and cabaret space in the state. While it remains a historic anchor of local nightlife, recent reports show it frequently overrun by straight tourist crowds and bachelorette parties. Skip the mainstream tourist blocks, hit the dance floor on peak nights, and keep the venue's authentic local roots alive. SEAGLA (Juneau & Southeast) With zero permanent commercial brick-and-mortar venues operating outside of the Anchorage bubble, the surrounding regions rely completely on grassroots networks. Skip the commercial travel platforms and map out the Capital region using this independent network, which handles social pop-up takeovers and multi-generational safety nets in southeast Alaska. Imperial Court of All Alaska (ICOAA) The oldest grassroots fundraising and social engine in the frontier state. The Reality Check
Alaska has a pretty safe environment and arrests for anything gay are a thing of the past. However, the state still refuses to pass statutory civil rights laws, meaning your legal protection depends entirely on whether you are inside the progressive Anchorage bubble or out on the conservative rural frontier. This is totally down to how the politicians feel the public's mood is on gay life in general - they are to blame for the policies but like all politicians, they follow the votes that in more rural parts may be driven by a more religious demographic. They may be ignorant themselves, or approach politics from a business perspective rather than a human one. The latter is the most probable: more votes equals more money. It's devastating for local gay men who have to live under this ubiquitous lazy form of politics.
