During the Ayutthaya period, being gay was not a crime but simply a part of life - especially at the palace. Classic Thai literature writes about gay affairs at the royal courts with not a hint of scandal, while the western media feigned horror. Nobody cared who you slept with before Western morality forced the issue.
King Rama's son Prince Kraison practically flaunted his all male theatre group. He acted as the ultimate royal sugar daddy by showering his favorite actors with expensive jewelry and clothing in a very public display of wealth and same sex affection.

Thailand was never colonized but the threat of the British and French empires terrified the state. To prove they were a modern nation the government threw their own people under the bus and imported Victorian penal codes. This officially outlawed gay sex simply to appease European sensibilities.
While the US and UK were aggressively hunting down gay men during the Cold War Thailand quietly decriminalized sodomy. It was an incredibly progressive legal move that completely contradicted the strict gender norms the state had been desperately trying to enforce since the 1930s.
When the Vietnam War escalated, the US military needed a secure playground for its exhausted troops. Thailand happily stepped up as the ultimate Rest and Recreation hub. Hundreds of thousands of American soldiers poured across the border. In response, quiet fishing villages like Pattaya transformed into massive red-light districts overnight. Gay soldiers on leave found their own distinct escape. While the US military was aggressively hunting and discharging men for their sexuality back on base, gay GIs found an underground haven in Thailand where local authorities simply did not care who you took to bed. When the war finally ended and the troops went home, the government realized this new infrastructure was far too lucrative to dismantle. That sprawling network of bars and brothels seamlessly morphed into a permanent global industry built on sex, drugs, transactional marriages, and endless parties, meaning today, "Thailand is known across the world as the largest supplier of commercial sexual services".
It took until the 21st century but the Thai Ministry of Health finally stopped classifying homosexuality as a mental illness. This simple administrative change fundamentally shifted how gay men could operate and stripped conservative lawmakers of their favorite medical excuse for discrimination.
After decades of brutal military coups and political stalls the youth led pro democracy movement finally broke the dam. Parliament overwhelmingly passed comprehensive same sex marriage to grant full adoption and inheritance rights. This makes Thailand the first nation in Southeast Asia to actually treat gay men as equal citizens.

Thailand's tourist industry has an unspoken problem: foreigner tourists are not liked - and that includes gay tourists. I know, how can we say that? This is the land of smiles - the Thais are so friendly. And they are, you're right. But in the tourist areas, the Thais are tired of misbehaving tourists. Cheap flights and what was an unbelievably cheap country to visit, led to the dregs of western society being able to afford to visit and even live there. Think Vietnam vets with PTSD, drug dealers and addicts and drunks and not forgetting the sex tourists. The Thais have been abused for decades, with their own government complicit in order to grow a powerful economy on the back of its poor. You can't do that to a people and expect genuine smiles.
The result is the mystery of westerners falling from balconies - aka the "Flying Farangs", the reason why no taxis are stopping for you and why the local mafia are allowed to rip you off when you go to pay for your jet ski or scooter rental. You will have a fabulous time in Thailand if you understand the country's trauma and adjust your behavior to suit. Do that and you may never experience a fake smile. However, the tension exists - do the gay travel gurus mention it?
We pulled these quotes from the top independent and most reliable travel guides so you can choose the one for you. Here is what they are saying right now.

Thailand is a great place to visit and live. It has no issues with gay people but there is some lingering resentment and scams around in tourist areas. Be aware of those scams, insist on the meter being on in a taxi, show the love and help change those Thai smiles into real ones.
