The ancient cosmopolitan cities of Damascus and Aleppo historically served as vibrant hubs where poetry and social customs accommodated same-sex male affection long before modern borders were carved. This native acceptance was crushed in 1949 when French Mandate legal structures were formalized into Article 520, criminalizing gay relations with prison time. Today, the country is a fragmented landscape of extreme violence and profound political shifts. The Assad regime had weaponized the old French law to arrest gay men to boost its moral authority, but that did not save it from collapsing in December 2024 when a massive rebel alliance seized Damascus and forced the dictator to flee. While ISIS continues to run shadow operations from the deserts, a new transitional government led by conservative Islamist factions now controls the capital, enforcing its own severe crackdowns and keeping the territory highly dangerous for gay men.

Syria once forced gay men to navigate a brutal Baathist police state in total secrecy. Following the recent fall of the Assad regime, the chaotic power transition simply traded old dictators for fundamentalist militant rulers who actively track local residents.

Street Level Terror
Wealthy elites sometimes get temporary protection behind compound walls. They are lucky. Working-class gay men face constant street by street checkpoints and phone inspections by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham forces. This relentless surveillance exposes gay men to instant extortion if they meet a less radical but greedy armed terrorist, and arbitrary execution squads if not. The secret to survival is invisibility.
A Shocking Future
The current legislative trajectory shows a terrifying regression as transitional authorities entirely omit civil protections from upcoming constitutional drafts. The local gay community will continue to exist. They are used to societal erasure, but every time they show intimacy on any level with another man, they are playing with death.

If they find anything gay, something very bad is about to happen to you.

Do not spend your data on gay meeting apps because authorities use them to trap you. Avoid public markets or transport hubs in Damascus since intense surveillance makes these zones hotspots for arbitrary arrests. Survival relies on a street-smart that is top level, but too confident is often very dangerous too. If you do meet anyone, make sure they have no details of you on their phone - Not even your number. Work out how to meet each other by arrangement, not via a chat. Keep it off the grid - Keep it safe.
