HIV Medication Keeps Everyone Safe
Fact Checked: May 29, 2026. Hub Page.
Saudi Arabia continues to run a glossy tourism campaign designed to lure not only western money, but also unmarried couples and the 'Pink' dollars of the gay community. An official state tourism site, Experience AlUla, asks, 'Are LGBT visitors welcome to visit AlUla?' The answer? "Everyone is welcome to visit Saudi Arabia and visitors are not asked to disclose such personal details." We investigated this claim.
The AlUla region in Saudi Arabia may be more friendly to tourists, but we can tell you this - 'don't ask - don't tell' is dangerous advice. Same-sex relationships are fully criminalized under Sharia law, and Islamic judges are reported to have given sentences to gay people that range from long prison sentences and fines to capital punishment. Suddenly, that promised tolerance doesn't check out.
While business travelers can usually rely on "tourist privilege" inside five-star hotel compounds, the street reality is a horror show. Article 6 of the Anti-Cyber Crime Law allows police to use fake profiles to monitor social media and entrap gay men on 'morality' charges. Once arrested, the gay victim will then be forced to open his phone so police can search for other gay content and contacts. Even if you are careful and sure you are talking to a gay guy on an app, if he gets arrested, then your name is the next one to hit the charge sheet.
"Last Update: March 12, 2026
In Saudi Arabia, criminal penalties are based on Shariah, and same-sex sexual activity is prohibited with a maximum punishment of death. People suspected of homosexuality, as well as trans women, have been arrested, detained, tortured, and prosecuted based on morality-related grounds, such as “cross-dressing,” “offenses against Islam,” “attacks against public morals,” and “encouraging or promoting homosexuality.”"

Urgent (PEP): If you think you have been exposed to HIV, you must start PEP within 72 hours.
Saudi Arabia boasts an elite, world-class medical infrastructure across major corporate hubs like Riyadh and Jeddah. However, confidential sexual healthcare is non-existent for gay men as doctors and laboratories must report infectious diseases - including HIV.
Testing positive for HIV, Hepatitis B/C, or Syphilis can lead to deportation and a lifetime travel ban.
While short-term tourist entries bypass testing, securing any long-term work or residency permit mandates a rigorous medical exam which will include HIV.
If you are living in a country where it is impossible to get care and you're panicking about HIV right now, stop, look at this screen. This screen is here for you. There is a lot of outdated opinion about HIV out there, but these are just homophobic rubbish. Take a slow, deep breath. You have time. You are going to be okay and we are with you. HIV is a completely manageable medical condition. With modern medication, you will live a long, healthy, and happy life. But you must avoid stress, it is your absolute worst enemy right now - It will make you weak. I know that's easy to say, but just try following the breathing exercises below. They really work. Protect yourself: rest, eat a meal, listen to music, and do whatever you must to quiet your mind - Force a smile, and within a minute you will start to feel better. I know, but it works. Do it.
If you are trapped in a hostile country and local state doctors are not safe for you, your priority is to move yourself to a safe environment. I know that's not easy, you might think it's impossible, but you are not alone. International organizations exist solely to help gay people like you to escape dangerous regimes. They can really help you and you can get your life-saving healthcare. Take a deep breath. You have time but you must take action as soon as possible.
Keep your status to yourself. Short-term tourist visas do not screen for HIV, and you can cross the border with a discreet personal supply of
medication up to two months. Carry-on Only: Life-saving medication never leaves the traveler's physical possession.
Keep it in the Original Pharmacy Box: The bottle or box must have the official pharmacy printing clearly displaying the traveler's legal name, matching his
passport exactly. Legally prescribed medication for personal use is not contraband for a short-term tourist.
The "Generic" Doctor's Letter: Have the prescribing physician write a standard, official travel letter on clinic letterhead. The trick is the phrasing. Ask your
doctor to state the medication is "prescribed daily for a chronic, long-term medical condition." It does not need to explicitly shout "HIV treatment" or "MSM
sexual health". It just needs to establish legal ownership. If you require emergency PEP, arrange an immediate flight out of the country instead of accessing
local public hospitals. Israel is the nearest safe country.

"At the other end of the spectrum come (in descending order) Afghanistan, the Republic of Chechnya in Russia, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Yemen, each with a score of -22 points or below, signaling that they are dangerous countries for LGBT+ travelers, where homosexuals are persecuted and killed."

Five-star international hotel compounds in Riyadh offer luxury privacy, but stepping off-property strips away your protection. The regime wants your money, not your lifestyle.
Any public displays of affection trigger arrest under the heavily enforced Public Decency Law. The hidden local community survives exclusively offline through private expat connections.
Religious cyber patrols operate relentless honeytrap stings across apps like Grindr - no apps are safe. Meeting a blank profile often means state entrapment and serious consequences.

High-end gatherings offer temporary safe bubbles for elite crowds.
Clean your phone. Border officials hold the legal right to randomly audit social accounts and private messaging data.
Verdict: Avoid travel. You might read on the Nomadic Boys website that Saudi Arabia is a fantastic place to visit, but they still use expressions like 'low-key', 'discreet', 'unspoken vibe' and 'very much underground'. This is a clue to the danger. Sure, you might be ok, but you also have a real risk of arrest. Because we don't rely on 'affiliate links' to make money, we can give you the raw truth. The risk of entrapment, prison, fines and deportation is just not worth it.
Sharia dress mandates enforcing biological sex presentation. Very dangerous for Trans people.
GWN | May 2026
Street safety for gay men in Saudi Arabia is highly precarious due to strict uncodified laws and aggressive public morality mandates. There are zero officially published arrest statistics per year due to severe state secrecy, though global monitoring groups track ongoing digital traps under local cybercrime codes.
